“Women & Museums” pairs Sara VanDerBeek’s photographs with a selection of objects that the artist culled from Mia’s collection, objects that resonate with her experiences. The resulting installation materializes the complex nature of interpreting historical collections—and underscores the role of photography in shaping our reception of historical figures.
VanDerBeek has had solo exhibitions at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Baltimore Museum of Art; Hammer Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art; Fondazione Memmo, Rome; and Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Walker Art Center; and the Museum of Modern Art.
