The little section of water in the area was more green compared to other places in the landscape. The particular location reminded me of the stories that my mother often told. She stated that one should avoid waters that were algae blue-green because it was often a sign that a spiritual entity owns the territory and lives in the area. She advises to not pick up anything and don’t touch the waters; that if one was eating while traveling in through a forest, to make an offering and acknowledge the spirits of the place. For me, the stories they tell about the natural landscape was not only about cautionary tales regarding human stupidity, but these stories reveal larger narratives about how some Hmong people historically have lived alongside other non-human living things. Similarly, my grandfather also believed that one should never come across a stone, a branch, a thing and violently kick or force it elsewhere because they have a purpose for being placed where they lay. These are things that I think about when I’m walking, and moving through space; what does it mean to exist, to be, to live among, things?
